Funding is tightening for the biggest AI buyers, and lenders are pricing it in.

Top of mind

The Financial Times reported OpenAI cut its round target to $20B from $30B. Blackstone expects Anthropic to land at double-B after its IPO. Alphabet, Amazon and Meta posted negative free cash flow in the latest period.

Hyperscaler cash flow turns negative as capex climbs

TechCrunch·2026-10-30

TakeawayTechCrunch's tally of the latest earnings shows capex rising while free cash flow falls at three of four big buyers.

  • Alphabet: Q3 free cash flow of -$9.1B; capex up to $205B this year.
  • Amazon: trailing 12-month free cash flow of -$42.4B; $220B capex expected.
  • Meta: Q3 free cash flow of -$2.1B; capex up to $145B.
  • Microsoft: +$18.6B free cash flow; capex of $45.2B versus $50B projected.

AngleMicrosoft blamed its shortfall on delays at third-party capacity providers, so the miss came from delivery, not demand. TechCrunch cites S&P Global Market Intelligence for $326B of debt raised by five hyperscalers in 2026, triple last year.

TrendForce sees AI networking at $279.8B in 2027

TakeawayTrendForce forecasts AI networking and interconnect revenue of $279.8B in 2027, up from $37.9B in 2024.

  • Switches: $105B, nearly 38% of the total.
  • Pluggable optical transceivers: $84.1B, up 76% year over year.
  • NICs and DPUs: $57.4B, more than double year over year.
  • 1.6T parts reach about 56% of transceiver revenue, overtaking 800G as the main driver.

AngleTrendForce says networking value per accelerator depends on topology, switch configuration and NIC bandwidth, not chip count alone. Model the fabric as its own line. This is an analyst forecast, not booked revenue.

Buyer Signals & Deals

OpenAI cuts funding target to $20B

TakeawayThe Financial Times reported OpenAI lowered its round target to $20B from $30B, with UAE investors leading.

  • The Wall Street Journal reported $11B secured so far, under half the original target.
  • The WSJ described the response from some large investors as "tepid".
  • Reported valuation fell to $1.25T from $1.4T.

AngleBoth figures are press reports; OpenAI had not commented in TechCrunch's story. A smaller first close matters for suppliers and landlords holding OpenAI capacity commitments, which are sized to the earlier raise.

Blackstone expects Anthropic to land in junk territory

TakeawayThe Financial Times reported Blackstone now expects a double-B rating for Anthropic after its IPO.

  • Blackstone had expected investment grade before 2027.
  • Blackstone anchored a $63B deal to finance Anthropic's chips.
  • Anthropic and Blackstone declined to comment.

AngleThe rating agencies have not rated Anthropic; this is Blackstone's expectation as reported. Double-B is the top tier of speculative grade, and it would raise the cost of the debt that funds compute leases.

Neocloud & GPU Cloud Moves

Nvidia weighs guaranteeing Nscale's West Virginia site

TakeawayNvidia is in talks, not finalized, to back billions in debt for Nscale's 460MW first building.

  • Structure: a residual value guarantee; Nvidia would step in if Nscale defaulted on construction payments.
  • Anthropic's contract for the first building is $44.6B, per Nscale's IPO filing; a second at about $45B is under discussion.
  • Nvidia has about $170B in investments and credit support across neoclouds and customers.
  • CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN each fell more than 30% in October.

AngleChip vendors are now underwriting the buildings their chips go into. That props up financing, and it concentrates the sector's risk on one supplier's balance sheet.

Power & Datacenter Buildout

Runware targets 30MW of pods a day by 2028

TechCrunch·2026-10-30

TakeawayRunware plans a factory line for prefabricated data center pods, with company claims of 48-hour deployment.

  • Target: 30MW of capacity a day by 2028, nearly 1GW a month.
  • Claims over $1B in committed interest, more than 20MW, in the month since it began offering pods externally.
  • Site pipeline of 397MW; raised more than $60M to date.
  • Build time is three weeks, which it expects to cut to a day.

AngleEvery figure is the company's own and the factory is not yet at volume. The 48 hours covers installation and setup, not build. Its pods still rely on Nvidia networking.

Judge lets NAACP suit over xAI turbines proceed

TechCrunch·2026-10-31

TakeawayA federal judge denied xAI's motion to dismiss a Clean Air Act suit over its Colossus data center near Memphis.

  • Plaintiffs allege at least 35 combustion turbines ran without required air permits.
  • The judge ruled the turbines are not "mobile sources" under Mississippi's plan.
  • A similar Department of Justice motion was denied earlier this month.

AngleOn-site gas turbines have been the fast route to power. This ruling lets permit exposure proceed to litigation, which adds a legal-risk line to behind-the-meter plans. The allegations are unproven.

Google's orbital TPU prototype is online

TechCrunch·2026-10-30

TakeawayGoogle's Suncatcher satellite, built by Planet Labs, is communicating with the ground and running Gemma 4.

  • Carries four TPUs, but only one can run at a time.
  • Generates up to 1kW, limiting runs to about 20 minutes.
  • Two more TPU satellites are planned for 2027.

AngleAt 1kW, this tests thermal and radiation behaviour, not capacity. Silent bit flips are the open question, and the economics rest on launch costs that TechCrunch says remain far off.
